Assisted Living

Assisted living communities are an alternative when maintaining a home has become too much, health conditions have changed or meal preparation becomes challenging.

Assisted living communities may provide studios, one bedroom and two bedroom units. Included in the monthly price may be meals, laundry, housekeeping and transportation. Additional services are provided for a fee (help with a shower, help walking to a meal and medication reminder.) If more personal care is required, the assisted living community may out source it with a private duty home care company. The company would charge a separate fee on top of the monthly assisted living fee.

Some things to consider before moving into an assisted living community:
  • Monthly budget
  • Location
  • Studio/one bedroom/two bedroom
  • Visit to sample meals
  • Additional costs
  • Any hidden costs
  • Options for returning to a private residence

Another form of assisted living is board and care. Board and care refers to a residential home that has been converted to accommodate up to six residents. The rooms can be private or shared and costs vary.
